How to use Movie Maker on Windows 10

Many familiar features of Windows Movie Maker are now buried in the official Photos application. Here’s how to access it and get started.

Movie Maker, which is a Windows shot, was checked as an application with the launch of Windows 10 in 2015.

The reason behind that might be understandable – Movie Maker is very basic and most people will use something like Adobe Premiere Pro to edit ordinary videos on Windows.

However, there are times when you might need to edit videos quickly but don’t want or need to pay a subscription, and fortunately there are still tools for this built-in to one of Microsoft’s stock applications.

Where is Movie Maker on Windows 10?

Movie Maker that you know from Windows 7 and Windows Vista is no longer available. Instead, there are similar video editing tools in Microsoft’s photo application.

This is a free download on the Microsoft Store if it’s not already installed.

Considering it’s a feature buried in the gallery application, there is a surprising level of functionality here. In addition to editing basic videos quickly, you can also add music, adjust individual clips, and even add 3D effects.

However, not all versions of Windows 10 will support it. Make sure your device at least runs the Creator Autumn Update, released towards the end of 2017.

Look for Photos in the Start menu and launch the application. It must show photos and videos stored in the default Pictures folder, set to the latest above.

The video editor is unclear because you have to click the Create button from the menu at the top.

How to use a video editor on Windows 10

Click the Create button from the menu at the top of the Photos application and select Automatic video or Custom Video and then select photos and videos to include.

1

When you select everything you want, click the Create button at the top and you will be asked to name your video. After waiting a while, your video will start playing.

2

If you don’t like music or style, click the button above ‘Remix it for me’ and a new random style and music will be selected.

3

You can save or share videos when you are happy, or you can click the blue Edit video button at the bottom to get to the full editor.

How do I edit videos myself?

If you want full control from start to finish, then head to the ‘Collection’ view in the Photos application.

Hover over the photo or video and a square box will appear in the upper right corner. Click on it to select items, then select the photos and other videos that you want to include in your video.

4

Now click the + Add button to the top and choose New video with music.

Type a name for your video and you will see a link appear to ‘View video’. If not, click the Video project at the top and click the video that you just created.

5

Now the complete editor will open.

The interface is clean and simple: a very modern version of Windows Movie Maker.

The clip you choose is displayed at the top left, and preview with top right playback control. Below, on the Storyboard, is a sequence of clips that have been added automatically to the video to be played sequentially from left to right.

You can click and drag the clip to reorder and you can add new ones from the project library section. To delete a clip from Storyboard, hover over it and click ‘X’.

6

How do I choose which part of the clip is displayed?

Click on the clip on the Storyboard, then click Cut. (Note that this option will only be displayed if you select a video clip. If you click on a photo, you can only change its duration.)

7

This opens the clip editor where you can drag the blue handle to the places where you want to start and end the clip. Click Finish when you are finished.

8

But before you click Finish, note that at the top of this window there are several controls from the main editor – namely Filter, Text and Movement.

Click on one of these and their selection will be displayed on the right side. The filter is clear: click one to see how it looks.

9

If you want to add text to the clip, click Text then type the box at the top. Select one of the styles from the bottom, then choose where you want it to appear under ‘Layout’ at the bottom.
How do I add 3D effects to my videos?

From the main editor, select the clip you want, then click 3D effects from the menu above.

Browse through the effects on the right, or use the search bar. Now, drag the slider below the video to the point where you want the effect to begin.

Click on the 3D effect that you selected and it will be inserted into the clip at that moment. You can resize it, and use the 3D handle to rotate it to the exact position and orientation you need.

10

If the effect follows the object in the video, click the ‘Attach to point’ switch, then drag the blue anchor point to the exact point that needs to be moved. Hopefully, ‘AI’ will succeed in doing a good job so that the effects remain in sync.

How do you change music and music volume?

From the main editor window, click Music from the menu at the top. Select a song, and use the checkbox below to decide whether you want the video to synchronize with the beat of the music or not. If you choose synchronization, the cut will be done so that the next video starts on time with the drum beat.

11

If the music is too loud and you cannot hear someone talking in the video, click the speaker icon next to Music and drag the slider to a more appropriate volume.

How do you change the theme?

As you have guessed, clicking on Themes at the top allows you to choose among the styles available for your video. This mainly affects the style of the text and title, but also which music is chosen automatically.
